Real Talk
I got my hands on the DeWalt 20-Volt MAX XR Lithium-Ion Cordless Brushless 3-1/4in. Planer (Model - DCP580) and wanted to share some thoughts with everyone.
Initial impression was that this tool, as is the case with many other DeWalt tools, is well built and feels as though it’s made well and of a good quality. The planer is light enough (7.4 pounds without the battery) that it won’t wear you down to use it for an extended period. It’s brushless motor is plenty powerful and quieter than I am used to out of a planer this style. Additionally, being that the motor is brushless it is more efficient and should allow for more run time on a single charge when compared to a brushed motor.
This Planer has a two blade design compared to some others which only use one blade further making this planer more efficient than others. It also has space onboard for storage of two spare blades (sold separately) and the Allen wrench needed to change them out.
The ergonomics of the planer are good, it has the same grip that you are familiar with from DeWalt’s drills, which feels comfortable in your hand. The safety switch is on both sides of the handle and requires a downward push rather than sliding one direction or the other. The planer also has a V-notch running the middle of the bottom plate, allowing for tapered edges.

Final Takeaways
The DeWalt DCP580 20-Volt MAX XR Lithium-Ion Cordless Brushless 3-1/4 in. Planer is an excellent option for a cordless lightweight planer to take with you to your job-sites. As long as you’re willing to sweep up the wood chips afterwards, or fashion a separate dust bag onto the tool, buy it.
